FAQ with Doc
Can I take part in sports?
Absolutely, children with asthma can take part in sports. Many well known athletes such as Asthma Society Ambassadors Ireland footballer, John O’Shea and rugby star, Ronan O’Gara have asthma. Part of a good asthma management plan is being physically active. There are no absolute restrictions as long as some simple guidelines are followed.
Many children with asthma develop wheezing and coughing with exercise, especially after exercising continuously, such as after jogging. These symptoms can be prevented by taking your reliever inhaler fifteen minutes before exercise. Ask your doctor to write clear instructions on your Asthma Management Plan!
"Warming up" before exercise also helps. If cold air triggers your asthma, in cold weather, wearing a scarf , which covers the nose and mouth while exercising may help to warm the air you inhale. Swimming is a very good form of exercise for children with asthma because the air inhaled is warm and moist, however some children with asthma may find their asthma is affected by the chlorine in swimming pools.
